The historic brand was present at the Le Mans classic car event... with its most modern car
The legendary sports car manufacturer founded by Alessandro de Tomaso in 1959 in Modena was reborn in 2015 by the Asian group Ideal Team Venture, which has not yet put forward any business plans for the brand. However, they are currently working on their new supercar : the De Tomaso P72.
This racing car, designed by Jowyn Wong and with the technical and financial support of Apollo Automobil, has already been seen in events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed , roaring with its 5.0-litre turbocharged Coyote V8 engine, signed by Ford.
Only 72 units of this beautiful car will be built, inspired by the lines of the old competitors of the 24 Hours of Le Mans , specifically the P Series manufactured by Ferrari and the later Porsches , such as the Porsche 917.
The old school style prevails in this car, which was spotted in several units at this year's Le Mans Classic , proving that De Tomaso 's adventure and rebirth are serious. In fact, the P72 will be built at the Nürburgring , in a joint facility with the Capricorn Group . This brand is well known in the industry for developing high-quality carbon fiber parts , and its achievements include the Porsche 919 chassis that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In short, many stars are aligning. And they're all truly promising.
Le Mans Classic is an event that takes place on the Circuit de la Sarthe and brings together classic cars from all over the world and all eras to race and emulate the past of Le Mans . However, it's not just classic cars that are on display. Historic manufacturers such as Ferrari and Bugatti also exhibit their models, and auctions of all types of cars fetching millions of euros are held there.
De Tomaso had a strong presence, showing off its prototypes to the public and putting them on the track. Not only did the P72s appear, but the brand also featured classics like the De Tomaso Pantera.
In total, there were three De Tomaso P72s, each with spectacular designs that clearly evoke the racing's past. The first features a body in a sort of metallic British Green color with orange-copper wheels, mirrors, and interior . The second was painted mint green with matte metallic rims, mirrors, and various details , and the number 72 on the hood. Finally, the third was painted pearl white with the French flag running across the car like racing lines and various metallic parts.
The public response, both at the track and on social media, has been overwhelming. Without a doubt, this is one of the most beautiful supercars of recent decades, one that refuses to surrender to modern trends. Its goal is to stand out. It will be built entirely by hand , with the aforementioned V8 engine producing around 700 hp , which will be sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox , and a luxurious interior reminiscent of Pagani 's work . Leather and metal trim, analog gauges, and no multimedia screen.
There's less and less time left until we see it on the road, as the first deliveries to customers are scheduled for 2023. They're dreaming big, but if Koeniggsegg or Pagani have been able to succeed from nothing... why not the De Tomaso?
